News travels fast, especially on the internet and social media. It travels faster when it comes to personal care products.
You’ve probably seen the recent buzz about natural antiperspirant. They have quickly gained popularity, and can be found in almost any store you shop at.
It was only a few months ago that I became self aware of the ingredients in my antiperspirant. I have always paid close attention to the ingredients in my skin and hair products, but I haven’t as much glanced at my deodorant.
These are the ingredients I found.
Aluminum Zirconium Octachlorohydrex Gly (Anhydrous) (16.0%) Water, Alcohol Denat., Propylene Glycol, Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Trisiloxane, Calcium Chloride, Peg/Ppg-18/18 Dimethicone, Fragrance.
What is Aluminum? Aluminum salts are in antiperspirants, with 18 varieties that are approved from the US Food and Drug Administration. They form insoluble plugs inside sweat ducts to temporarily prevent sweat from releasing. You can think of Aluminum salts as temporary “plugs” for our pores. It limits our sweat, which is our bodies natural way of releasing toxins. The plug is gradually broken down and sweat is again released from our pores. There were many concerns regarding aluminum. Researchers found high amounts of aluminum were present in breast cancer, kidney disfunction and Alzheimer’s Disease. Although research found these links, it has not been proven. Therefore products containing aluminum will still be manufactured and sold.
The American Cancer Society, U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA), National Cancer Institute, and the European Commission of Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) announced there isn‘t a link between antiperspirants containing aluminum salts and Alzheimer’s disease or breast cancer.
Natural Deodorant works by allowing the body to release our sweat, without the body odor. It allows us to detoxify, and regulate our body temperature. Natural deodorants also don’t contain any parabens and are scented with essential oil, instead of Fragrance. I adore my natural deodorant from the company Schmidt’s. Mine is scented with rose oil and is priced at $6.99 at your local Target. Schmidt’s deodorants are not antiperspirants. They are formulated with a natural approach. Using arrowroot and minerals from plant powders, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), and essential Oils, they keep you smelling fresh!
